But what are we going to do in our sessions?
Therapy is not a ‘one size fits all’ solution; it’s a unique and varied process. Depending on your needs, I use different elements from my therapy ‘toolbox’ to find the right approach that works for you. In addition to talking, here are some approaches we may try in your virtual or in-person session:
Drama Therapy & Psychodrama:
Exploring ‘roles’ that you’ve been cast in by the self or others that you may or may not want to play.
Looking at the stories that you’ve been told or are telling about yourself. Are they true? Could they be revised?
Using role-play (psychodrama) for difficult interactions. What if you could safely confront someone who has hurt you? Or talk to someone you’d like to forgive? What would you say and how would it feel?
Creative Arts Therapy:
Art-making (collage, free drawing, and reflective portraiture to explore the self and relationships)
Improv (being present, spontaneous, saying ‘yes, and’)
Sandtray and projectives (making meaning from objects, exploring safe distance from emotions)
EYE MOVEMENT DESENSITIZATION and REPROCESSING THERAPY (EMDR)
A treatment used for trauma and reducing symptoms of PTSD and Complex PTSD.
EMDR involves using ‘bilateral stimulation’ to help clients process difficult memories and come to a place of peace and understanding. EMDR focuses on ‘internal resourcing’ in order to strengthen the ability to self-regulate.
Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
An evidence-backed cognitive approach to treating trauma and reducing symptoms of PTSD and Complex PTSD.
What are some of your ‘stuck points’ or harmful thoughts that you may keep repeating to yourself? What would happen to your emotional experience if these negative thoughts shifted to more neutral, positive, or accepting ones?
DIALECTICAL BEHAVIORAL THERAPY (DBT)
A highly effective treatment for identifying triggers, managing emotions, and reducing destructive behaviors.
Practical ways that ‘mindfulness’ and meditation can help you cope in the day-to-day
What is your ‘wise mind’ and how can it help guide you?
